Melanoma and Hair loss
When we decided I was going on treatment for melanoma, 1 of my first questions was would I loose my hair? Not how sick would I be or the side effects. On interferon they said I would loose some of it but not it all. Loosing my hair was mentally challenging, although I knew I was sick, loosing my hair made me look sick too. About 7 weeks into treatment it started to fall out for a few days and stopped for a few weeks, then it would start falling out again. In the end I had lost about 90% of my hair. I remember it stopped falling out for a longer period around September, so I thought that was it until 1 morning in the end of November and I woke up to a pillow of hair again, I was devastated. I tried a lot of products to save a few strands, someone gave me forever living shampoo and conditioner which seemed to save it a small bit. I had thought about getting a wig but I was never going to loose all of my hair so there was no need, instead I got some head scarfs and people used to think it was fashion. I will never forget 1 day in tk max in Letterkenny, the girl at the counter complimented my scarf, saying how lucky I was to be able to wear a head scarf and that they didn't suit her, it still makes me smile. I found that part quite scary, as I said in other posts I got up every morning and did my make up, what I didn't say was that I used to do it without looking at my hair. That was a new skill I learned on interferon! After treatment it did come back to normal, it didn't take my hair colour that I used before melanoma, we never figured out why. I also invested in some clip in extensions which I should have got years ago, so that was my silver lining on that cloud.
